A Runner’s Guide to Plyometrics
and Core Strength Training
RunMetrics is a strength training program designed specifically for runners. It has been created to help runners prevent injury and to enable them to run faster.
RunMetrics incorporates plyometrics or "jump training" to increase explosive power. The latest sports medicine research proves that plyometric training will allow you to run faster. RunMetrics also utilizes running specific core strength exercises that can improve running mechanics, improve efficiency and increase running economy.
These exercises will decrease the likelihood of injury often encountered when runners increase mileage or increase intensity by adding speed work or interval training. Runners who increase mileage to train for a half or full marathon are at increased injury risk.
RunMetrics allows runners to add mileage safely and effectively.
The goal of RunMetrics is to allow runners to run without injury and to improve running performance. The exercises in this program utilize the weight of your body and can be done without expensive equipment or a gym membership, and they can be done anywhere.
Get Ready to Run Faster, Farther and Injury Free!
In this book we will share the knowledge we have gained while working with runners over the last decade. We will show the cause of common running injuries and how to train to prevent them. We will show you ways to test your own strength and stability to see if you may be at increased risk for injury. We will define plyometrics and explain how these explosive exercises are guaranteed to make you run faster. We will give you the knowledge to incorporate this exciting new form of dynamic exercise into your training. You will learn how to train to run; how to get yourself ready to take on greater mileage or speed without overloading your body and how to take it to the next level by adding explosive power to your training that will pay dividends at the finish line.

Heather wins the Hamptons Half-Marathon!

In the half-marathon, Chris Albanese, 30, of New
York City was first in 1:18:57 (6:02) while Heather Williams-Fives, 34, of
Centerport, New York, was the top female and was 10th overall in 1:26:46 (6:38).
Williams-Fives claimed her victory just eight months removed from having a baby.
It was also the best half-marathon time by a female in the three-year history of
the Hamptons Marathon and Half-Marathon, breaking Bridget McKenna’s 1:27:35 mark
set last year.
Williams-Fives was pleasantly surprised by her
first-place finish in the half-marathon, particularly considering she had a baby
girl only eight months ago and, like Allen, has taken a break from more serious
and rigorous training. “I had no idea how I was going to feel going into the
race,” she said. “I felt good so I kept pushing at whatever pace I could hold.
It was a great course and a great day to do it. You couldn’t have asked for
better weather.”

New York Road Runners Club Learning Series at HSS, June 23, 2009
Runners' Health and Marathon Training
Hospital for Special Surgery - an Orthopedic Consultant to the New
York Road Runners for the ING NYC Marathon - hosted a Learning Series
event to teach marathon runners what to expect, from a musculoskeletal
perspective, as they train, and how to prevent injury leading up to and
after the marathon.
The session was led by physicians and therapists from the Sports Medicine and Shoulder Service and the Sports Rehabilitation and Performance Center at HSS, many of whom are themselves avid and committed marathon runners/triathletes.
The following videos from the event will show viewers how to understand
the causes of running injury, identify and avoid common mistakes,
improve running form, and incorporate strength training exercises to
minimize risk of injury and maximize performance. These videos are
targeted to both first time and experienced marathoners.
